The headline is not the market every professional experiences
The United States added only 29,000 payroll jobs in September while unemployment remained relatively low at 4.2 percent. Professional and business services edged down by 9,000 jobs, and separate ADP payroll data also showed weakness in professional and business services and financial activities.
At the same time, education and health services, manufacturing, construction and leisure and hospitality posted stronger gains in ADP’s September data. This creates very different conditions for candidates pursuing the same function in different industries.
Target the function and the sector
An FP&A professional does not need to limit the search to financial-services companies. Manufacturers, healthcare systems, construction-related businesses and their suppliers also need budgeting, forecasting, operational analysis and business partnership.
The same principle applies to HR, communications, project management and technology. Transferable functions often have better prospects when directed toward employers with current operating demand.
Treat a job posting as a lead, not proof of urgency
BLS reported 7.1 million job openings at the end of August and 5.2 million hires during the month. These measure different things and do not establish whether any particular posting represents an urgent vacancy. A posting may be exploratory, delayed by approval, repeatedly refreshed or attached to an uncertain timeline. Candidates should verify demand through employee conversations, recruiter contact, recent company announcements and evidence that similar roles are being filled.
This is also why a healthy search requires several active conversations. One attractive process can stall for reasons that have nothing to do with the candidate’s quality.

Your practical next steps
- Classify target sectors as expanding, stable or contracting using current hiring evidence.
- Add two adjacent growth sectors without abandoning your core function.
- Pair every priority application with human outreach and a check for current hiring activity.
- Measure qualified conversations, interviews and next steps—not application volume alone.
